Le CSISS qu'on peut traduire en français par centre pour une intégration des sciences sociales par l'espace a été fondé en 1999 par la NSF (équivalent américain du CNRS) comme une infrastructure de recherche aux services des sciences de l'homme et de la société. Partant du constat d'un rôle croissant de l'espace et du territoire dans la recherche en sciences sociales, le CSISS a développé et mis au point des outils communs en accès libre pour renforcer les capacités d'analyse spatiale de l'ensemble des chercheurs en Sciences Humaines et Sociales.
Le site du CSISS très riche est désormais figé depuis 2007. Il est remplacé par trois autres sites plus spécialisés : Center for Spatial Studies (CSS), Teach Spatial (Teach Spatial), et Advanced Spatial Analysis (ASA)
